What to Wear on Trek

The Stake has asked that all Trek participants wear pioneer clothing throughout this experience. You must have THREE DAYS worth of clothing.

Guys must wear pants and lightweight, light colored, long sleeved shirts. Hiking and/or moisture wicking pants are good. Straw hats with straps it ties or a western (cowboy) hat is necessary. Good sock and worn in shoes (no cotton socks) for the feet.

Girls must wear long skirts (mid-calf is great) and lightweight, light colored, long sleeved shirts. Pantaloons, light-weight pajama bottoms, or scrubs must be worn underneath and may be cut off to capri length. An apron is not necessary. A bonnet isn’t necessary, but a straw hat with a brim and ties or straps is. No cotton socks—nylon or wool is best (70% nylon). Shoes much be broken in.

**Mesh shoes that allow for "breathing" will let dirt in, causing blisters. Please do your best to find good ones that will keep the dirt out.**

BRING EXTRA SOCKS in case you need to change them (dirty, wet, sweaty, etc).

The DI is a great place to find things to wear or you can make your clothes. Here are some pattern ideas:

Exercise Schedule

Exercise Schedule:

Clothing Information

Information on What to Wear on Trek:
*Guidelines for Trekking*

Clothing
  • Choose light colored/light weight fabrics
  • Avoid jeans as they are too hot and cause chaffing
  • Long sleeves and loose clothing to prevent sunburns and insect bites
  • Scrubs, light-weight pajama bottoms, or old-fashioned pantaloons under skirts or dresses, for warmth and modesty--can be cut off to capri length
  • Avoid wearing leggings in warm weather--they lead to overheating
  • During river crossing, dresses ARE NOT to be lifted up or tied up around the waist (modesty at all times)
  • Permethrin: Spray on clothes (do not wear clothes while spraying) before you come, to prevent ticks getting on you or your clothing
  • Work gloves (to prevent blisters while pulling/pushing handcart)
  • BRING EXTRA SOCKS! If socks get wet, sweaty, or really dirty, replacing them can help prevent blisters

Shoes or Boots
  • Shoes with good arch support that have been broken in (hiking boots or shoes or tennis shoes)
  • Do not wear new shoes; they will cause blisters
  • Duct tape or Leukotape applied to your heels before walking can help prevent blisters; there are also sprays and blister-preventing applications that can help
  • The two-sock system described in the Church Handcart Trek Reenactment Handbook is effective (page 16)
  • Sports socks, avoid cotton (70% nylon works best)
  • Water shoes or old tennis shoes for river crossings
  • No flip-flops

Head Wear
  • No baseball caps
  • Wide-brimmed hat provides shade for your head and face (both YM and YW); straw is great!
  • All hats need "stampede straps" or ties to keep hats on during strong winds
  • No bonnets for girls, unless you also have a straw hat

Neck Cooler

Rain Gear
  • Poncho or rain coat with a hood
  • Umbrellas are not a good idea, as the wind turns them inside out

Coats/Jackets
  • A light wind resistant jacket is needed for cool nights, even in summer
  • Hoodies work well for cool weather

Possibles Bag
  • Mole skin, Duct tape (hot spots)
  • Hand sanitizer
  • Kleenex
  • Toilet paper
  • Small first aid kit
  • Chap stick
  • Sunscreen
  • Mosquito & tick spray with 40% Deet
  • Personal medications (inhalers, epi pens, etc)
  • Camera

Hydration

Tips for Staying Hydrated:
  • Get creative with ice cubes. Jazz up water with frozen clementine slices or with ice cubes made from a no-sugar-added juice, like pomegranate.
  • Say “NO” to soda and sports drinks
  • Dilute juice
  • For everything you drink that isn’t water, drink a glass of water
  • Set a timer on your phone to drink water every hour
  • Fill a water bottle and take it with you.
  • Fill it half full with water and freeze, filling up the rest of the way with fresh water before you go
  • Drink ½-1 cup of water before every meal or snack
  • Make Flavored Waters.
The stake has asked that each youth brings a large, clear (not necessarily white) water bottle so that water checks may be down throughout the experience. We don’t want anyone to get dehydrated!

OQ2 Trek Information

Everyone mark your calendars! Trek is coming...

Wednesday, June 26th - 6:30 am thru
Saturday, June 29th (time TBA)

**UPDATE**  I was told that shoes with mesh that allow for dirt to get in is not recommended, as it can cause blisters. Please make sure your shoes are broken in!

They also said that socks that are 70% nylon will work best and putting a blister-preventing lubricant can help. Carry an extra pair of socks with you each day, in case they get wet.

For girls, light-weight pajama pants or scrubs work great under skirts and can be cut off to capri length.

Each youth will need to eat before you come on Trek and bring a sack lunch--coolers will NOT be provided, so plan accordingly.

Youth and Ma's & Pa's will be riding luxury buses to and from Trek and will be riding with their new families

Walks are starting on Saturday,  May 4th at 8 am--meet at the Watkins's home and bring your permission slip.

Make sure you have a name of an ancestor from your family to take on Trek (name you found for the temple, pioneer, family member who was first to join the Church, etc). If you need help, contact a Family History Consultant.

**All youth must be 14 by December 31, 2019 to participate**
